Britain has been made by a number of remarkable events. The Ice Ages which shaped our island landscape. Invasions by the Danes, and Romans. The Christian missionaries. The Battle of Hastings in 1066 which brought with Norman feudal rule. Magna Carta and Law. The Armada. The Tudors. The English Civil War. Cromell and Parliament. The Act of Union. Coal and the Industrial Revolution. The First World War. The Second World War. North Sea Oil. The EU. If I had to choose one thing that has shaped modern Britain, I'd say King Alfred's decision to unite England and publish the bible in English (Anglo saxon) which paved the way for a strong and United Kingdom which would become a major world power in the succeeding centuries and a language which would become the most spoken language in the world. For my money, he's the man who put the Great in Great Britain.

The events of the past always effect the present. For example, In the past, before Word War 1, Canada was the property of the imperialist nation of Britain. Our actions in World War One began to gain Canada its independence. Indeed if it had not been for our actions in the past Canada would still have been ruled by Britain. We would not have been able to make our own decision, or elect our own leaders if this had not happened. There are hundreds of other examples in Canadian history that have changed our constitution, the Treaty of Versailles, the King Bying Crisis etc; each of these events has brought a change into the way Canada work today. The past is the greatest influence on Canada's society, and on any society for that matter. Technically speaking, the events of history shaped the way things work today. Likewise the events of today also effect the events of the future.
