Jerry Garcia primarily used a variety of guitar picks throughout his career, but he is most famously associated with the "Dunlop Tortex" picks, particularly the green 0.73mm gauge. He also occasionally used a heavy celluloid pick. Garcia's choice of picks contributed to his unique tone and playing style, which were integral to The Grateful Dead's sound.
Jerry Garcia Used several different styles of "picking" during his life. He was known to hold a pick between thumb and pointer while still using the other three fingers all at once! He also mastered the ability to use a false middle finger; his real one was lost in a wood chopping accident. Jerry also played without a pick and that stems from his roots as a bluegrass or "jug" band player.
An electic guitar can use any pick, as a acoustic guitar can use. If you want to strum you want a flismy pick, or a small size. And if you want to pick the notes your going to want to have a hard pick, or a large.

Using a pick on an acoustic guitar is very common. Whether or not to use one really depends on what genre of music you are playing.

No, you don't have to. But I play guitar and I would recommend using a guitar pick. If you don't then your fingers will get sore from blisters. Its not fun. So even though you don't HAVE to use one... USE ONE!!!
