There are four families in an orchestra. The strings (violins, violas, cellos and string basses) make up the core of the group. For color the wind families are added: Woodwinds (flute, oboe, Clarinet, bassoon), Brass (Trumpet, french horn, Trombone and tuba) and the percussion instruments. As an honorary mention, the French Horns are also considered co-members of the woodwind section. Chorus, piano and organ are occasional additions to the orchestral family for certain works.

There are four (4) main sections:

  • Strings
  • Woodwinds
  • Brass
  • Percussion

The actual number of instruments used in each section is determined by the composer of the piece. At concerts you may see certain musicians leaving the stage or coming on stage during a break between pieces ... they're not going out for coffee, you see.
