Trumpets are one of the most versatile instruments. Because they can be played in a variety of manners and with a variety of techniques and sounds, they can be played in a variety of musical settings, such as:
Orchestra/Symphony/Concert Band
The trumpet is used widely in the orchestral, symphonic, and especially concert band realms. Many of the great composers wrote works for the trumpet that have grown to great fame. Some of these pieces include trumpet Concerto in E Flat by Haydn, and Trumpet Voluntary and Trumpet Tune and Air, both by Purcell
Rock/Pop
Trumpets have been featured in rock and pop for many years now. From the Beatles's major hit "Penny Lane" (1967) with its famous piccolo trumpet solo, to The Emotions's "Best of My Love", released in 1977, to Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al" released in 1986, to many of the Motown hits, the trumpet is widely used both as a backup instrument and to play melodic interludes.
Mariachi
A Mexican cultural standard which has gained fame across the Western Hemisphere is the genre called "Mariachi". Mariachi, used for celebratory occasions, such as weddings, are small, mobile ensembles, composed of several violins, a guitar, a vihuela(a higher pitched, Mexican guitar), a guítarron (a small version of the acoustic bass), and two trumpets. A famous Mariachi piece that features the trumpet and is known internationally is "La Cucaracha".
Jazz
Undoubtedly, the genre in which the trumpet is most widely and prolifically used is Jazz. Some of the most influential Jazz artists of all time have been trumpet players - trumpet players like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Wynton Marsalis. Trumpets can be found in every subgenre of Jazz, from Ragtime and Dixieland, Big Band and Swing, Bebop and Free Jazz, to the more modern Jazz Fusion and Smooth Jazz genres.
Some of the most notable Jazz pieces feature trumpets playing the melody, or memorable licks. Examples inclue "Sing, Sing, Sing", "Four", "So What", "In the Mood", "Jeepers Creepers", "April in Paris", "Autumn Leaves", "Stompin' at the Savoy", "Gonna Fly Now", "Skyliner", and countless others.
Lee Loughnane, the trumpet player from the band Chicago, is known to play a Holton trumpet. Specifically, he has been associated with the Holton Model 179 trumpet. Loughnane's choice of instrument contributes to the distinct sound of the band's brass section.
