If an auto, check for stamping on the dipstick. They probably were using ATF+4 by then. By certain on the correct fluid as ATF+3 is different than ATF+4. ATF+4 is a synthetic. Dan the tranny man. THE OWNERS MANUAL SAYS DEXTRON III BUT Chrysler RECOMMENDS ATF +4 NOW IT IS FROM THE DEALER AT ABOUT $4.00 A QUART YOU CAN USE IT IN THE TRANSFER CASE TOO

It depends greatly on what transmission.

The aw4 uses dextron 3, a 42re or 44re uses Mopar ATF+4.

A manual uses 75w90. The new Cherokee with the nine speed transmission uses a special dealer only fluid.

Use only ATF +4. Any other type of fluid will cause shift quality issues. Also be sure to check the fluid level in park or neutral as listed on the dipstick.
