There were several. The late Clarence Clemons backed up Ronnie and revived (Ronettes) Belinda Carlisle and Grace Slick- in the l987 Latin Quarter Concert- It is funny but the size differential between Ronnie and Mr. Clemons is played up with stage antics- back to back- his wailing sax and her, well vibrato. There are rumors that Stan Goetz may have been involved when the Ronettes were in their prime. They were NOT instrumentalists and in fact, could not read music.
I believe they are a sister act- so that answers your questions- the Ronettes were in normal form ( there were two back-up Ronettes- the other Talley sisters- Diane and Elaine) Veronica Bennett ( Lead) Estelle Bennett ( now deceased-her sister-back up, and Nedra Talley- Harmony. The Mothers of Veronica and Nedra were sisters- so it was a family affair. Both the Chipmunks and closer to real life- the Chipettes were comedic take-offs on the Ronettes.
Presenting, the Fabulous Ronettes featuring VERONICA ( the words Ronettes and Veronica in full caps) This was their first and signature album. Veronica has an alm ost Elizabeth Taylor- Cleo hairdo in the center position as lead singer. This is the oldest and I guess rarest Ronettes album. By the way the name of the group may in part have evolved from a trade name for a neat (tactical) Microphone called Ronette. This was a trade name.
Rain.
The original group broke up in l966. this was two years before Veronica Bennett became Mrs. Spector- that occured in l968, some say l969. There have, of course been many revival attempts with alternate Ronettes since- the l987 Latin Quarter concert which I have seen on Computer ( modern miracle) had Belinda Carlisle and Grace Slick as back-up (Ronettes) with Ronnie in the lead, of course. The Ronettes- originals were briefly (together) for the Hall of Fame induction concert in 2007. a substitute singer sang for Estelle- but Estelle was in on the award ceremonies, so to speak.l

The Ronettes, originally known as Ronnie and the Relations, were a musical group produced by Phil Spector. It is not so widely known this wall of sound group also toured, did concerts, and in fact was the only female group known to have toured with the Beatles! The Ronettes worked up some neat stage acts, which varied quite a bit, the TV acts on Bandstand and Shindig were toned down., For example in the uncut version of the ( Transfiguration) act by the Big Three. The Girls were not only wearing white dresses- but in the nightclub act had flowers in their hair and all three were barefoot! at the code phrase ( We"ll make "em turn their heads, every place we go. the curtains on the amplfifiers were parted, Ronnie split into three- the Two other Ronettes in a sort of triangular formation! From the right angles it is starkly effective, with the original costuming, a touch of the occult. No, The Zombies were Not the back up band but that was the idea they were trying to get across!
