From 1968 to 1976 browning used that type of serial number. The starting number 71 indicates the year made. The letter G indicates a light weight shotgun. Letters G (light weight)and M (standard weight) were used. Usually it was only followed by a four digit number. Yours seems to have an additional number but it meant the number of the gun off the line. As far as the value I don't know. I also have a browning that I'm trying to price. Go to http://www.browning.com/services/dategun/detail.asp?id=13 to view the info that I just gave you.
