The Battle of Salamis took place between the combined Greek Navy led by Thermistocles and The Persian Navy of Xerxes I in September 480 BC. It took place in the strait between Piraeus and Salamis Island. Although heavily outnumbered, the Greek Fleet defeated the Persians whose large fleet was unable to maneuver in the narrow strait. The Greek triremes on the left flank managed to break their opposition and threaten the enemy centre which could not withdraw because of a strong contrary wind and the fact that the strait was packed with Persian ships. The Persian admiral, Ariamenes, was killed in the fighting, disrupting the chain of command and adding to the confusion. The loss of many ships and the lack of naval dominance meant that the Persians were no longer able to maintain supply lines to their huge land army and were forced to withdraw. the Greek states that had been conquered by the Persians were later freed when the Persians were also defeated at the Battles of Platea and Mycale..
