Why are people seemingly so unfriendly to one another in this day and age that when you offer a friendly smile or hold a door open you are viewed like some kind of alien from outer space?

Great answer above! Wow and from a 15 year old. Too bad more people aren't so smart. I agree that a lot of it is lack of trust. In addition, a lot of people are stressed these days with work, children, money or lack of it, etc. It also depends on where you live. Occasionally, a guy will hold the door open for me but it always takes me off guard because it doesn't happen that often. I was recently in a convenience store in a smaller town in the "country" and this guy actually moved over so I could walk down the aise to get a coke. It surprised me but I smiled and said thank you! I'm always friendly to people, speak to them, and smile anyway. The world needs more of it. I've had many people tell me how I made their day because I joke around with them and smile a lot even when I'm having a bad day....unless it's a really bad day then I pretty much hide out.
Pretty much some people have a lot of bad stuff going on in there life so like the fella above me i try to cheer people and make people life. I see it as my goal in life. If someone bes hostile to me i either leave them or try to cheer em up. Its a rewarding job :D
