Why is `Pet Sounds`so influential ? Even in the early years of the 21st century it still rates in the top three on most listings as the best-ever rock/pop album. Note that this album was released in May 1966 !!
Upto then, there had not been a rock/pop album anything like this. Only The Beatles had issued material - `Rubber Soul` and `Revolver`- where there had been experimentation with instuments other than the standard group drums and Guitars, notably `Eleanor Rigby`, Norwegian Wood` and `Tomorrow Never Knows.`
On Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson used (sometimes doubling-up) bass harmonicas, organs, brass and wind instruments. There was also unique use of percussion with drums and timpanis.
The vocals of The Beach Boys completed this fantastic album.
