Antares is the 16th brightest star in all the heavens, the 11th brightest normally visible from most heavily populated regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is a bright orangish star, the brightest star in the fishhook-shaped constellation of Scorpius (not "Scorpio"), and is due south at roughly midnight (standard time) on May 30. The farther south you are the better, but at the time of culmination (midnight May 30), Antares is easily visible to the south from all of the continental US and most of Canada and Europe. Nearly 40 degrees high in Miami (at best), Antares is still easily visible -- at times -- from Calgary -- but doesn't even get above the horizon in Fairbanks.
