Check the trunk, driver's side close to the hinge. You should see a label that says Fuel Pump Reset Switch right next to a finger hole in the lining along the top of the side. The fuel switch is in there.
If your 1989 Mercury Topaz starts but won't stay running, you should check the fuel system, including the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel injectors. Additionally, check the ignition system for issues with the spark plugs, ignition coil, or ignition module. Finally, inspect the air intake system for any blockages or leaks that could be affecting the engine's ability to run smoothly.
A low idle could be due to a faulty idle air control valve or a vacuum leak, causing poor fuel-air mixture at low speeds. Losing power on hills and stalling in traffic could be due to a weak fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter, resulting in insufficient fuel delivery to the engine under load. I recommend checking these components for any issues.
Have the module in the dist checked out. I had the exact same problem for 2 years. And every one had a different reason. Its a bad fuel pump, i promise. Replace the fuel pump and throw on a new fuel filter and it will run great. just make sure you dont buy the cheapest one. I did that and it broke a year later. ive had a new one in for about 4 years now and no more problem. replacing the pump means emptying your gas tank enough to drop the gas tank and remove the top of the tank the pump is right there its a pain in the butt but relatively cheap if you do it yourself. around $60.00 dollars.Good luck I have a 93 Topaz that had the same issue, and it was an easy fix - the solenoid needed to be replaced. If the problem is the solenoid, the problem may get worse so that the car won't even start when it's cooled down.
That is a physical change - at least the pump is (air in, air out, with no chemical change). The energy required to run the pump probably will come from a chemical reaction though: an electric generator burning fuel to run the generator or food being digested and converted to energy in the muscles if it is a person powering it
The generator may have a problem with fuel delivery, such as a clogged fuel filter or a weak fuel pump. By using starting fluid, you are providing an external ignition source that helps the engine start even if there is an issue with fuel delivery. It is recommended to have a professional inspect and repair the fuel system to ensure proper functioning of the generator.
If it has just run out of gas and nothing else, then when you put enough fuel in the tank, just keep starting it. It has an electric fuel pump. Might take a couple of tries.

The fuel pump does not normally have to be "reset". If the vehicle is in a crash that causes the inertia switch to trip, the switch will have to be reset before the fuel pump will run.
I have a 94 Mercury Topaz that recently was exhibiting that symptom, but it didn't start until after a mechanic replaced my fuel pump. Apparently he installed a universal pump and may have damaged it upon installation. I put up with that for about 6 months until the car also started dying on hot days. A new mechanic installed a better quality pump, and now my car runs fine.
Fuel pump will not run and engine will not start.
Assuming it didn't run before you replaced the fuel pump... three things. 1. Bad fuel filter and maybe it didn't need a fuel pump. 2. Bad fuel pump. (it happens) 3. Something else is wrong. Suggest you check for any codes of the computer.
If you turn on the ignition without starting the engine you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds. This is a good indication the fuel pump is good but not 100% positive. A bad fuel pump can run but not pump fuel. If you hear it for run for a few seconds just replace the fuel filter to make sure it is not clogged. If it still does not pump have a fuel pressure test run to verify the condition of the pump.
Could be,out of gas, pick-up sock in tank plugged, pump motor may run but the pump itself is bad,
could be several things ,bad fuel pump, bad fuel pressure regulator ,fuel filter needs replaced. or air idle valve needs cleaned or replaced. I would start with new fuel f9ilter and then have the air idle valve checked or take it off and clean it yourself. Not hard to do if you are mech inclined and have a few metric tools.
Yes it does. But you can not run a mechanical pump on a fuel injected engine. It will not pump enough fuel to run the engine.
If everything else is good, like the fuel pressure ( sometimes the fuel pump in the tank stops ) wires. plugs etc. then the thing to look at is the Ign. module. It is on the distributor. "89's had that problem. You will have to pull the dist. to change the module. Not too expensive. The car will run fine then just stall. It will start again and run for a while till it happens again.
The fuel pump may be defective or the fuel filter may be clogged. Replace the fuel filter if you hear the pump run when you first turn on the ignition without starting the engine. It should run for a few seconds. If you do not hear the pump running, check the fuse and the fuel pump relay. If you hear it run and after replacing the fuel filter you still have no fuel, the pump is defective and must be replaced.
