The 1960 Valdivia earthquake or Great Chilean Earthquake of 22 May 1960 is to date the most powerful earthquake ever recorded on Earth, rating 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale. It occurred in the afternoon (19:11 GMT, 15:11 local time) and its resulting tsunami affected southern Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia, and the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.

The initial epicenter was near Cañete (see map) some 900 km (435 miles) south of Santiago, with Temuco being the closest large city, while Valdivia was the most affected city. It caused localised tsunamis that severely battered the Chilean coast, with waves up to 25 metres (82 ft). The main tsunami raced across the Pacific Ocean and devastated Hilo, Hawaii. Waves as high as 10.7 metres (35 ft) were recorded 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles) from the epicenter, and as far away as Japan and the Philippines.

The death toll (and rate) and monetary losses arising from such a widespread disaster are not obvious. Various estimates of the total number of fatalities from the earthquake and tsunamis have been published, with the USGS citing studies with figures of 2,231; 3,000; or 5,700 killed, and another source uses an estimate of 6,000 dead.Different sources have estimated the monetary cost ranged from 400 million to 800 million US dollars (or 2.9 to 5.8 billion in 2011 dollars, adjusted for inflation).

What is the biggest type of earthquake in the world?

The biggest type of earthquake is known as a megathrust earthquake. These earthquakes occur at subduction zones where one tectonic plate is forced beneath another. Megathrust earthquakes are capable of producing the most powerful seismic activity on Earth, with magnitudes exceeding 9.0.

What was the second biggest earthquake in the world?

The second biggest earthquake in recorded history was the Great Chilean earthquake, also known as the Valdivia earthquake, which occurred on May 22, 1960. It had a magnitude of 9.5 and caused widespread damage and loss of life in Chile.

What are the effects of earthquakes in different parts of the world?

firstly it depends on the Richter scale and the different types of plates that are all around the world for example: in japan, there was an earthquake that measure-rd 9.0 in the Richter scale. but in Iran it measured a 6.3 magnitude in the Richter scale. so what i meant by that is that each part of the world has its own plate.

What is the worst earthquake that has ever been in this world?

The 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile is considered the most powerful earthquake ever recorded, with a magnitude of 9.5. It caused widespread destruction and generated a deadly tsunami that affected locations across the Pacific Ocean.

When and where has there been a major earthquake in the past months?

There were 2 major Earthquakes: 1)Haiti: Happened on January 12 and lasted 35 seconds. The earthquake was a 7.0 on the Richter Scale, and has caused major damage to the country. The USA has helped a lot, including the remake of "We Are The World" written by Micheal Jackson in the 1980's. 2) Chili: This earthquake was an 8.8 on the Richter scale and struck on February 27, 2010. Many earthquakes have happened around the country since the 1st earthquake.

What is used to determine the earthquakes intensity?

Seismologists estimate earthquake intensity based on the reports of witnesses on the level of felt ground movement, on the amount of damage caused by an earthquake and also based on the ground accelerations as measured by seismometers. The scale used to define earthquake intensity in much of the world is the Modified Mercalli scale (before this, a scale known as the Rossi-Forel scale was used). In Europe the Macroseismic scale is in use.

What is the worst tragedies in the world?

Probably the huge earthquake Japan had recently. I heard it was an 8.9 on the Richter scale.

Why might measurements from the Richter scale be misleading to someone who doesn't know how it works?

The Richter Scale is a numerical scale for expressing the magnitude of an earthquake on the basis of seismograph oscillations. So if someone doesn't know how to use the scale, it could be misleading, because if the Earthquake is a 9.7, but you think the earthquake is a 2.4, then you can put the world in danger. 2.4 and 9.7 earthquakes have a huge difference. I hope that makes sense to you.
