DON'T TOUCH IT UNTIL IT HAS BEEN EXAMINED BY AN EXPERT APPRAISER. The one sure way to kill the collector value of an old gun is to alter the original condition. If the damage is too great, you really should have it restored by an expert. Doug Turnbull comes to mind, and there's a place in Ohio that's very good but the name hass slipped my mind (or what passes for such these days). The place in Ohio that I know of is Carl Henderson, he has handles a number of restorations for me. His quality is so high that on a number of occasions top-ranking experts have missed the fact the weapon was not original. On the order of Turnbull but very humble and fair priced. You can contact him at carlgunsmith@aol.com or you can request photos of his work from my collection at smokinhydes1@Yahoo.com

I'm not sure, but I think the sportsman has a different barrel configuration. They might be compatible, i say about a 1 in 4 chance of it working. I've never looked at a sportsman pumps barrel, but I've noticed how different model 870 barrels arent always compatible. if the years of the barrel and sportsman are very far apart, you can lessen the chances of compatibility. i suggest you email the Remington website and try to get a professional opinion from them. There is no S12 listed in the Standard Catalog. Only 11 people in the world can own a Sousa Grade Ithaca double. If you have one and have lost the barrels you are out of luck. If it is a single barrel trap gun, the odds are not much better.
The "R" on an Ithaca 16 gauge shotgun Model 37R denotes that the shotgun has a ribbed barrel. The ribbed barrel provides added strength to the shotgun's structure and helps with aiming and shooting accuracy.
Some common issues reported with the Remington Model 742 include jamming, feeding problems, and inconsistent accuracy. These issues can often be attributed to the rifle's design and construction.
