Africa and Europe are two separate continents. However, there are islands and ports in Africa that are considered part of European countries. Spain occupies and claims the port of Melilla in Morocco, and Ceuta (the African side of the Straits of Gibraltar) as well as the smaller locations of the Islas Chafarinas, the Peñón de Alhucemas and the Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera. It also administers the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa. Portugal still retains Madeira, an island group in the Atlantic Ocean. France's territories are islands on either side of Madagascar : Mayotte on the western side and Réunion on the eastern side. Britain controls the mid-Atlantic islands of Saint Helena, Ascension Island, and Tristan de Cunha. Many European countries had colonies in Africa, beginning with Alexander the great, and later the Romans. During the 15th through the 20th Century, various areas came under the control of England, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Denmark, Germany, and Belgium. (see the map links below)
