Pontnewydd is "Newbridge" (a village in Cwmbran, not too far away) so Baker answer is wrong Pontnewynydd i think means "Day of new bridge" because:

Pont is "Bridge"

newy is "of new"

nydd is "day"

It is the place name of a suburban town in Wales. Some people says that since the root word "pont" derives from "bridge", the town means "Newbridge".
