Although many Indian and Western scholars believe it to be originally from India, this is a popular misconception. The name does mean "Sun" but not in Hindi or even Devanagari script. The name originates from the White Hun or Huna people of Central Asia. These people conquered the Gupta Empire in India and gradually assimilated into Indian society. Although originally nomadic, after conquering northern India these people adopted Hinduism and local Indian customs.

They worshiped the Sun god called Mihir or Mithra at times. The most famous of the White Huns in India, is Mihirkula, who ruled northern India between 502 to 530.
