Cod has always been the most prolific species living on the Grand Banks. When John Cabot returned to Europe with the news of a new source of fish, fleets of French, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Basque fishermen began fishing the waters off Newfoundland. By the 1700s, cod fishing became more and more controlled by Newfoundlander Meanwhile, offshore fishing by large European and Asian consortiums continued as eventually large refrigerator ships were developed to freeze the catch on-site, allowing weeks of continual fishing to occur.
n 1977, Canada extended its control over coastal waters from 12 to 200 nautical miles to discourage overfishing by huge offshore ships from Europe and Asia. Inshore fishers expressed concern over declining cod catches in 1985. In July 1992, 30,000 Newfoundlanders were put out of work when the northern cod harvest was closed. By 2003, all Canadian cod fishing was banned.

No. They banned it in 1992 when the cod fish was over-fished for hundreds of years. It re-opened in 1999 and only allowed some people to fish it, but the cod fish numbers still grew smaller, so they banned it again in 2002
The reason that Canada extended its territorial waters out to 200 nautical miles was to put a limit on cod fishing. Fishing was a major source of income for many people at that time.
Cod fishing was banned in 2003 primarily due to severe overfishing that led to a dramatic decline in cod populations, particularly in the North Atlantic. The stocks had fallen to dangerously low levels, prompting governments to implement a moratorium to allow the fish populations to recover. This ban aimed to protect the species and ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishing industry. The situation highlighted the need for better fisheries management practices to prevent similar crises in the future.
Apart for the breeding season, cod fishing is allowed in almost all countries as important part of many people's diets. However, some countries such as Canada have declared a moratorium in certain cod deposits in order to allow their population on increase again.
A type of fish
In a fishing net it is called the "cod end".
The cod fishery in Atlantic Canada experienced a dramatic collapse in the early 1990s, primarily due to overfishing and poor management practices. This led to a moratorium on cod fishing in 1992, significantly impacting local economies and communities dependent on the fishery. Although some recovery efforts have been implemented, the cod stocks have struggled to rebound fully, leading to ongoing challenges in the industry. The situation highlights the critical need for sustainable fishing practices and effective resource management.
the fish cod? because people were fishing too much hope that helps :)
