Gears move about an axis, which means they can only move clockwise and counterclockwise, not left or right.

That said, if you have two gears, made to rotate by a motor in opposite directions, and interconnected by a chain of an odd number of gears, then the two motors would work against each other. Depending on the strength of the motors, gears, and axles, the mechanism will either break, not move, or move in the direction forced by the dominant motor.
