During a performance, the Deputy Stage Manager (DSM) will sit at the prompt desk (or if the venue does not have a prompt desk, will sit in the control room) and call the show using the prompt book.

Generally, the DSM will use cans and cue lights which they will use to give stand-bys to the technical operator or cast member followed by a "Go".

The majority of shows will have lighting (LX) and sound (SND) cues. Depending on the requirements and size of the show the DSM may also have to cue actors, musical directors, flying cues, follow spot cues, AV and many other things.

The DSM will stand-by a cue several lines before it is due to happen and a response should be give by the operator/cast member/etc.

On cans an example of this would be:

DSM: "Standby please LX Cue 36."

LX Operator: "LX Standing By."

DSM: "LX Cue 36 Go."

When using cue lights, the DSM will press the standby button, and a red light will appear, the LX operator would then press their button and the light would turn orange to show they have acknowledged the standby. The DSM when then say go by pressing another button, turning the light green.

The DSM will also take notes on any mistakes or differences that occur during the show along with the run times and will then produce a show report.

What are the three stage managers called?

The three members of the Stage Management team are: the Stage Manager (SM), the Deputy Stage Manager (DSM) and the Assistant Stage Manager(s) (ASM). Not all productions will have ASM's and some may not even have a DSM - it is dependent upon the size of the production. A large scale West End show will have a SM, DSM and several ASM'S whereas a small touring show is likely to only have an SM.

Why do you think the Stage Manager talks directly to the audience in our town?

Stage Managers do not generally speak to the audience unless a situation arises and the performance is interrupted (such as a fire or an actor being seriously injured on stage). If a Stage Manager talks to an audience out with this it may be at the request of the director who wished them to introduce the show.
