In the min-19th Century, theater had house orchestras which would play background music during the play, a forerunner of the film soundtrack. Stealing an idea from opera, the musicians would play a theme for each of the main characters: heroic music for the hero, romantic music for the love-interest, and music in a minor key for the villain, leaving no room for interpretation for the audience, and lacking subtlety in the plot or characterization.
He translated it from an Italian version of the story.
