It probably depends on what you find to be difficult for children to get from a genuine performance of the Shakespeare play. The issues people may have with the play as Shakespeare wrote it are its length, Shakespeare's language, the idea of a stageplay, the sexual nature of the couple's relationship (indicated by nudity in some versions), violence, and the tragic ending.
One option is the version from the series Shakespeare: The Animated Tales. It is a cartoon, and it is only 25 minutes long. Being a cartoon, there is no nudity and no real people appear to be hurt. It was expressly developed for television for a general audience. It is often available from libraries but is very difficult to find and expensive to purchase.
If nudity is your only concern, you should steer clear of the 1968 film (Juliet's breasts and Romeo's buttocks), and to a lesser extent the 1996 film (Juliet's naked back). All others are no problem.
The real story of Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy and cannot be told without saying that Romeo and Juliet both die at the end. Kids generally learn about death at a relatively young age, when a grandparent or family pet dies. Once they understand this concept, there is no reason why they cannot understand a tragic ending.
Basically, if you are worried about talking to kids about death, suicide, violence or the kind of love that develops into marriage, you should not be trying to show them Romeo and Juliet at all. Wait until they are older, say, eight or nine.
Someone suggested Gnomeo and Juliet. The story of Gnomeo and Juliet unfortunately is very different from the Shakespeare play. Although there are characters with similar names and with similar relationships, they do not have the same characters and they interact differently. Most importantly, nothing anyone does in the movie has any lasting unfortunate consequences. Dead people don't stay dead; by a deus ex machina they all come alive again. So as a result, Gnomeo and Juliet is a comedy, not a tragedy. The same can be said of another Cartoon-using-elements-of-the-play offering, Romeo and Juliet: Sealed With a Kiss. These Cartoons are safe but they are not Romeo and Juliet; you will just have to tell them the real story later.
People watch Romeo and Juliet because it is a classic movement in literature. Romeo and Juliet was created by William Shakespeare.
yap. hey say jump has their newest single and it's entitled romeo and juliet. you can watch it on youtube already.
If you read the play or watch it being performed, the answer to this will seem obvious. Against all odds, Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other. That fact leads to everything that happens in the play after Act 1.
The Watch. Romeo finds her and thinks she is dead and kills himself. Then Juliet awakes and finds him dead. The Friar returns and tries to convince her to leave the tomb with him but she refuses. The Friar hears the Watch coming and flees the tomb. Juliet stabs herself. The Watch enters the tomb and find Paris, Romeo and Juliet all dead. The Prince, the Capulets, and Lord Montague arrive. Balthasar and the Friar explain what has happened and they all make up.
There is no such novel as Romeo and Juliet. It's a play. Whoever posed this question to you has no idea what they are talking about. Here's a suggestion: Get a copy of the movie Romeo and Juliet (1968) directed by Franco Zeffirelli, or, if you prefer, the movie Romeo+Juliet (1996) directed by Baz Luhrman, and watch it. Then read the play.

Watching it. How do you watch a book, do you ask? Well, you can't, but fortunately Romeo and Juliet is not a book to read; it's a play to watch. If you watch a play or movie based on a novel, you miss a lot of what the author intended. If you watch a play of a play, you get everything.
because its AWESOME ( not )
romeo and Juliet
Friar Laurence made a plan with Juliet to stop her from marrying Paris. He tells her to drink a potion which makes her seem dead. He then tries to send a message to Romeo telling him that he has to come to fetch Juliet and they can be together. The message doesn't reach Romeo and he then thinks Juliet is dead. Then they kill themselves. You should really watch one of the films or the play.
Haha, I was looking for it too. Reduced Shakespeare Company is the people who made it. One of the videos is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzVyqiskpMk :D
