An author of Science Fiction books. Howard Phillips (H.P.) Lovecraft was born in Rhode Island in 1890 and died in 1937.
His writing was mainly published in pulp magazines (such as 'Weird Tales' and 'Tales of the Macabre') and was little known in his lifetime. His reputation has grown since his death, he has become a cult figure and many of today's Horror writer's cite him as an influence. His stories have also become popular sources of movie scripts : the Re-animator series, From Beyond, The Dunwhich Horror. His writing is described as "cosmic horror" and often involved 'Old Ones', alien and supernatural beings that dwelt outside of time and space but were always trying to re-assert their evil and horrific influence on the world. One of these Old Ones was Cthulu and H.P. is probably best known for his 'Cthulu Mythos', the fictional world he created in stories such as 'Call of Cthulu'. Other of his works include: 'The Thing on the Doorstep', 'The Rats in the Walls' and 'The Lurker on the Threshold'.
The stories of H.P. Lovecraft contain many wonderfully amazing creatures. But in my humble opinion I find that Cthulhu (kah-thoo-loo) was Lovecraft's best creature.
H. P. Lovecraft was in fact racist. He displays this racism in a number of different contexts and some of his poetry. I cannot post what he really said due to the publishing policy on this website, but I am sure you can figure it out. Here is one of the clearest examples displaying racism: When, long ago, the gods created Earth, In love's fair image Man was shaped at birth The beasts for lesser parts were next designed; Yet were they too remote for humankind. To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man The Olympian host conceiv'd a dever plan A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure, Filled it with vice, and called the thing a ****** -H.P. Lovecraft
