Pompey was the most influential roman besides Crassus during the time before Caesar's Dictatorship. Caesar that came from a moderate background and didn't really have power to struggle the senate alone was in need of support from these men to succeed especially after 58 BC With the help from Pompey and Crassus his mandate in Gaul was extended for a period of 5 years which gave him time to conquer and pacify whole of France and claim triumphs.
The senate was against extending his mandate but thanks to the help from the two other triumvirates (the triumvirates were: Pompey, Crassus and Caesar) it was possible. Caesars successes in Gaul would give him the wealth, military power and reputation needed to battle the senate and later on Pompey Magna and claim the throne as Imperator for life.
