It was obviously not prohibitively expensive for people to write in Shakespeare's day. After all, people wrote each other notes and love-poems all the time. Shakespeare's sonnets were written purely to please other people or perhaps even Shakespeare himself. There was, of course, a cost to buying paper and ink and quills, and a penknife if you didn't already have one. But there is always some cost to doing these things. If you write something on your computer or phone and send it to someone by e-mail or text you may not pay for pen, ink or paper, but your computer and cell phone and internet connection and phone connection do not come for free.

∙ 7y agoPaper was not cheap, but was cheap enough that a person could afford to write notes and letters to others, as many characters do in Shakespeare's plays. On the other hand there is no indication that paper was wasted by doodling etc. The cost of writing, of paper and ink and quills, was a reasonable expense for someone who, like Shakespeare, was a professional writer.
