The people hated Socrates because the core basis of his philosophy was "wisest is he who knows he does not know." Socrates literally traveled around and told people that they were ignorant and didn't properly understand what they thought they understood, and he called all beliefs into question. Socrates thought true wisdom stemmed from self knowledge, and the realization that we can't know everything.

For obvious reasons, the public only saw Socrates as, to be blunt, an a** because it seemed like all he did was tear down other people's beliefs.

Hope that helped!! I think Socrates is awesome :)

In Plato Apology why does Socrates think the oracle says that no one is wiser than he?

Socrates believes the oracle is right because he alone knows that he knows nothing, while others mistakenly believe they have wisdom. Socrates' acknowledgment of his own ignorance distinguishes him as the wisest, as he is the only one aware of the limits of his knowledge.

Why is Socrates referred to as a gadfly in the apology?

Socrates kept asking questions. And asking, and asking, and asking. When those questions were answered, there were others. Eventually, these led to more questions that the Greeks didn't want to even ask, let alone answer. What is God, what is Art? how do we know? how do we know that we know? Socrates was able to reduce the most powerful to blubbering idiots through inquiry. (Think: annoying kid brother/sister, except in a cutting, biting, and superbly intelligent sort of way.)

What did Socrates think about human nature?

True to his teaching that "an unexamined life is not worth living" (Apology, 36a), Socrates spent most of his days examining the real reasons, or motivation, behind his human acts . His final act, in fact, epitomized what he was all about: Falsely sentenced to death for corrupting the youth and not believing in the ancestral gods (Apology, 17-42), Socrates, rather than suffer exile from the Athens he loved so much, willingly and with his own hand ended his life with a drink of deadly hemlock. Plato and Xenophon, Socrates' main biographers, paint his vocation, or calling in life, as an ardent desire to help people to live life to the fullest; that is, to live in conformity with their human nature (Phaedo, 63c). pipponeri@earthlink.net

What is the main difference between Crito's and Socrates's arguments?

The main difference between Crito's and Socrates's arguments is their stance on whether one should escape from prison. Crito argues that Socrates should escape to avoid unjust treatment and to prevent harm to his friends, while Socrates believes it is more important to adhere to the laws of the state and accept his punishment.
