Nikola completed "Lower" or "Primary" School, followed by the "Lower Real Gymnasium" or "Normal School" and moved to the Higher Real Gymnasium. He had a match teacher there named Martin Sekulić who was an influence to Tesla. He was able to do calculus in his head and some teachers believed that he was cheating but later came to the right conclusion. After that education Tesla went back home a bad case of cholera struck almost to his death. He ran away to Tomingaj, near Gračac evanding the draft into the Austro-Hungarian Army in Smiljan. He was lucky to join the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz, Austria, on a Military Frontier scholarship after that and graduated there.
