Communism as practiced in the 20th Century in the Soviet Union, Cuba, China, Vietnam, North Korea, and Laos, among other places, originated from the ideologies of 19th century German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. A variety of forms of communal social organization were championed by many 18th and early 19th century individuals and groups. Several experimental communities were established in the United States and elsewhere during that time. These experiments all eventually failed, although some lasted for many years.
