You may see fewer men out shopping at malls and carrying shopping bags of clothing, etc., but that doesn't mean they aren't shopping and buying things and loving every minute of it. I know many women who hate to shop (e.g., me), and many men who are shopaholics.
This type of misconception is a factor in gender bias, and is often spread by sexists and misogynists to trivialize the activities of girls and women and make them seem like frivolous time-wasters compared to their idea of "industrious hard-working and serious men".
Some men hate shopping with their wives and girlfriends because they aren't that interested in what the girls are shopping for, or where they are doing it, and how long it takes. Some women similarly have no interest in going shopping with their husbands because they don't use or need the same things as often, don't like being in the places the men go to shop, etc.
It is really not a gender thing and can't be said as a generalization.
