The third-century Church Father, Origen, writing of the total of Christian martyrs up to his own time, in Rome and elsewhere, states that there were not many - and that it was easy to count them. (Contra Celsum, 3.8).

The fourth-century Church historian, Eusebius, enumerated the martyrs of Palestine during the Great Persecution of Diocletian, indicating that no more than ninety-two Christians were martyred during the whole course of the persecution. Edward Gibbon estimates from this that fewer than two thousand Christians in the entire Roman Empire were martyred.

Eusebius contributed much to the tradition that great numbers of the early Christians had been martyred, but he himelf indirectly confessed that he related whatever might redound to the glory, and that he has suppressed all that could tend to the disgrace of religion.
