Quote:
"I will insist that the Hebrews have done more to civilize men than any other nation ... fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations" (John Adams, 2nd President of the United States).
"Certainly, the world without the Jews would have been a radically different place. Humanity might have eventually stumbled upon all the Jewish insights, but we cannot be sure. All the great conceptual discoveries of the human intellect seem obvious and inescapable once they had been revealed, but it requires a special genius to formulate them for the first time. The Jews had this gift. To them we owe the idea of equality before the law, both Divine and human; of the sanctity of life and the dignity of human person; of the individual conscience and of collective conscience, and social responsibility" (Paul Johnson, Christian historian, author of A History of the Jews and A History of Christianity).

These tablets symbolize divine law and moral guidance in Judeo-Christian traditions. They are often depicted as a foundational element of ethical conduct and legal principles in Western civilization. The Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle is the new name for the North Carolina Society for Ethical Culture. We recently changed our name to recognize that there is now another Ethical Society group in Asheville and to more clearly assert our identity as a humanist group. We remain a member of the American Ethical Union, the national organization of the Ethical Culture Movement whose members use various names such as Ethical Humanist Society, Ethical Culture Society, or Ethical Society. Check out their website at www.aeu.org.
The beliefs of the ancient Israelites, particularly their covenantal relationship with God and the moral imperatives found in texts like the Torah, laid a foundational framework for Western legal systems. Concepts such as justice, individual rights, and the importance of moral law influenced the development of Western legal thought, particularly in Judeo-Christian contexts. Additionally, the idea that laws should reflect ethical standards and the notion of accountability before a higher authority have permeated Western legal traditions. This heritage continues to shape contemporary understandings of law and governance in many Western societies.
