Hinduism was formed long before Buddhism was. In Hinduism there are two main paths to follow:

The path of Indulgence - basically the need to indulge and surrender your deepest desires.

The path of mortification - basically putting your body in pain and suffering to relieve your self of previous actions

for Buddism the path to enlightenment is known as the middle path. This is because Buddha was previously hindu. He created this path based on the four nobel truths:

1. life is suffering

2. suffering arises from desire

3. solution to suffering lies in curbing desires

4. to curb desires one must follow the eightfold path

which is:

1. right view

2. right intention

3. right speech

4. right action

5. right livelihood

6. right effort

7. right mindfulness

8. right concentration

I didnt go very in depth with the eightfold path, as that would be a very long essay, not an answer to a quick question so if you want more just look up the eight fold path.
