The fourteenth Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion and presently leader of one branch of Tibetan Buddhism. Specifically "The Way of Virtue" (Gelugpa). This Tantaric school of Buddhism is of the Kadampa tradition. It may generally be viewed as Mahayanic. His position is traditionally the head of state of Tibet although he has been both head of state and head of this branch of Tibetan Buddhism while the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama is being sought. He has been in exile since 1959 in India due to harsh tensions with China.
