No they are not. In medieval times Churches were recognized as Sanctuaries and could give protection, however, today they are not accorded that right or privileged by most countries.

The Vatican City is actually a small country located within the city of Rome, Italy. The Vatican City is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and it maintain embassies around the world. The Vatican calls their ambassadors' Nuncios. Nuncio is an ecclesiastical diplomatic title, derived from the ancient Latin word, Nuntius, meaning "envoy."

Nuncio's are not present in every country but most countries with Large Catholic populations have them.

The Nunciature to the United States of America is an ecclesiastical office of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. It is a diplomatic post of the Holy See, whose representative is called the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States with the rank of ambassador. The nuncio serves both as the ambassador of the Pope (as head of state of the Vatican) to the President of the United States, and as delegate and point-of-contact between the Catholic hierarchy in America and the Pope (as head of the church).

The physical building which houses the offices of the apostolic nuncio and his staff is also called the Nunciature to the United States of America. Its official name is the Embassy of the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See. Located at 3339 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008, it is exempt from the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Washington (canon 366 1°)
