Hinduism or 'Sanadan Dharma' - ie., Way of Life, is the first and foremost of the religions. Followers of Hinduism lived from the date when first person was created in the Earth. Example : In Bhagavatha purana says, Sage Kabila was doing penance in padala loka when 100 sons of King Sahara arrived. Padala loka here was referred to some foreign country.

At present there are nearly a billion followers of Hinduism, mainly in India, though Hindus live in many countries now. Before Islam came to India, all those who came here accepted Hinduism and merged into the Hindus. Hindus have never propagated their religion very vigorously, though conversion is not prohibited. Actually, without any central authority, any one who believes in any one of the various Hindu philosophies can call him/herself a Hindu.

The exception to this is the 'Hare-Krishna' movement, who have been very active for conversion.
