During the 19th century many skeptical theories were advanced about various aspects of The Bible. Daniel is no exception. The book of Daniel is considered by the bulk of the scholarly community (excluding traditionalist Christians and traditionalist Jews) to be a work of pure fiction spread during the Maccabean Revolt (hundreds of years after it was allegedly written) as a means to inspire the persecuted Jewish community. Although the book does contain historical figures and who did exist and events that did occur, there is no historical record of Daniel.

How does a fiction writer use facts and fiction in a historical story?

The same way you write any other story - plant your butt in a chair and get started! With historical fiction, though, you want to be sure you do a lot of research on the period of history you're writing about - pick that era and start looking around the internet, the library, and even around your own neighborhood if you have anyone who lived through that period of history! Historical fiction readers are very picky about facts, and will stop reading your work if you have it wrong. Here are some good links for you, too.

What do realistic and historical fiction have in common?

Fiction is just any story that is not real. This would include everything from "Goldilocks" to Anaconda to the latest #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, T is for Trespass. Historical fiction weaves some facts with the fiction. For instance Gone With the Wind wouldn't be the same if its setting was just "some war." Rhett, Scarlett, and Tara plantation are fictitious, but the story is driven by a real historic event. A historical drama would be something that is more fact than fiction. For instance, Glory revolves around real events but fills in details about those events with fictional characters to show what it must have been like to be personally involved in those events.
