Answer #2
The 10 Commandments were a broad summary of the law. In the Old Testament, a law may be used for a commandment, a word, a decree, a judgement, a custom or a prohibition. The first five books of the Old Testament are also know as the Torah, or the Books of the Law. There were also oral laws (unwritten laws). There were Noachide
Laws (Jewish legend positing that seven laws were given to Noah to provide gentile nations with a moral code).
Jesus inaugurated a new era. Jesus moved the understanding of law from its external, legalistic meaning to its spiritual one (Luke 16:16). Jesus summed up the whole law and teaching of the prophets with two great principles of love for God and neighbor (Matt. 22:36-40).
The Ten Commandments contain universal moral codes that can be found in almost all religions. It has been said that they are largely a repetition of the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi and the Hindu Vedas, among others. Where they do differ is in commanding that the Jews have no other god before me [God].
The moral laws given to Moses by God are often referred to as the Ten Commandments. These commandments outline principles for ethical behavior, such as honoring one's parents, refraining from murder and theft, and avoiding false witness and coveting. They serve as a foundation for moral conduct in many religious and ethical traditions.
In Matthew 22:34-40 Jesus condensed the Ten Commandments into two sets:1. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind"2. "Love your neighbor as yourself".The two kinds are 1) laws pertaining to reverence for God and 2) those pertaining to love and reverence and love for others. If you obeyed both of these commandments then you would obey all Ten Commandments.
In Exodus 31:18 the Ten Commandments are called the terms of the covenant. Also in Exodus 34:28, the explicit name 'Ten Commandments' is applied to the laws that were written on the stone tablets. The Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue. In Matthew 5:21 the Ten Commandments are also referred to as the Laws of Moses.
In ancient times, laws were only as effective as the ruler who promulgated them, so the best laws were those based on religion. The Ten Commandments were the most important of many commandments in the Hebrew Bible and were written down as having been received from God, thus ensuring their absolute observance by the faithful. The Ten Commandments is a mix of codes to ensure proper religious observance, and rules for harmonious society.A:Whether the Ten Commandments are really of divine origin depends on whether the biblical Exodus from Egypt is historically true. On this, the strong consensus of biblical scholars is that there never was an Exodus from Egypt as described in the Bible, in which case the story of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments from God can not be historical. There is no evidence that the Ten Commandments ever existed outside the Bible. They belong to traditions put down in writing during the middle centuries of the first millennium BCE. The first four commandments focus on religious observance. In fact the first three commandments are essentially different ways of saying to worship no other god. The remaining six commandments focus on some rules for a harmonious society. We need not regard them as rules for strict moral conduct because, for example, the tenth commandment says not to do not covet that which belongs to your neighbour, including his wife and slaves. We no longer think of wives as mere chattels, and ownership of slaves is now considered morally repugnant. The Ten Commandments hold a more honoured place in Christian religion than in modern Judaism. For Jews, although important, they are ten of the many important biblical laws they must obey. For Christians, the Ten Commandments are at the heart of the Old Testament.
The Ten Commandments are the terms of Covenant between Man and God. But these laws are for Man-kind to follow not for God. The laws "Do not steal" or "Don't worship other gods besides me" don't make sense with respect to God. Likewise, "Honor your father and mother" is a law for mankind, not for God who has no creator.
The ten commandments were laws that specifically based on the don`ts whiles the in the Hammurabi code the law came with a punishment for breaking it
