There are 12 books of history in the Hebrew Bible (O.T.):

  1. Genesis
  2. Exodus
  3. Numbers
  4. Deuteronomy
  5. Joshua
  6. Judges
  7. 1 & 2 Samuel
  8. 1 & 2 Kings
  9. Ruth
  10. Esther
  11. Ezra-Nehemiah
  12. 1 & 2 Chronicles
Leviticus is not a history book, as it contains very little narrative (it's all laws). And in the Hebrew Bible, the complete Samuel, Kings and Chronicles are one book each, not divided into two. Ezra and Nehemiah are divided in printed Hebrew Bibles, but this is not based on tradition (Gilyon Hashas commentary on Talmud, Sukkah 12a).

There are 66 books in the entire Bible.More information:There are a number of ways that people have divided the Bible in parts or sections. The most popular division is the "Old Testament" which is the first 39 books, from Genesis to Malachi and was written mainly in Hebrew, and the "New Testament" which is the last 27 books from Matthew to Revelation, and was written mainly in Greek with some parts written in Hebrew and Aramaic. Some people like to consider the "Gospels," Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as a division. The Pentateuch, which is the first five books of the Bible, is a lesser known "division" of the Bible. Even Psalms has been considered by some to be a division, as it is in itself a collection of books containing songs and praises to God. Whether we prefer to recognize divisions within the Bible or not, it is important to recognize the entire Bible as "inspired of God and beneficial."(Timothy 3:16)OTHER METHODS OF SECTIONINGThe Two Major Divisions:Old Testament (OT) & New Testament (NT)Seven Simple Divisions:1. Does the Old Testament contain 46 books?

There are 39 books or 46 books in the Old Testament scripture depending on which Biblical canon you accept. The Protestant Bibles have 39 books and the Catholic Bibles have 46 which include an additional 7 Apocrypha (or Deuterocanonical) books.Rabbinic Judaism recognizes 24 books of the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible, which are the core books accepted in all Christian Old Testament Bibles. The order and grouping of books are somewhat different. For example, the Hebrew Bible combines the 12 minor prophets into a single book. This accounts for most differences in the number of books.Additional Answer:Originally, the Hebrew text had 22 books and seems to have been changed for non-inspired reasons. This is especially true after Church Father, Jerome incorporated what many believe are non-scriptural works into the Old Testament and listed the New Testament number at 27 Books. There was a concern amongst some Jewish leaders of the Sacred Number of 49 existing - 7x7 the number of completion squared.
