Hinduism has been the major religion of the Indian subcontinent since the 3rd century A.D.; but before that nearly for seven hundred years Buddhism had been reigning supreme in society. With the beginning of the decline of Buddhism for different reasons, Hinduism began to pass through a phase of revival until it was challenged by the coming of Islam to India in the latter part of the twelfth century. But inspite of the spread of Islam to all nooks and corners of India, Hinduism still remained the single most-observed religion of the subcontinent. With the gradual fall of the Mughal Empire and the establishement of the British Empire, Hinduism was refurbished through reform movements and modernization under the leadership of Raja Rammohan Roy, Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo and Mahatma Gandhi. Rammohan did his work by reforms, Dayananda by giving an elaborate meaning of Hinduism minus the Caste System, Vivekanda by spreading neo-Vedantism outside India, Sri Aurobindo by giving it a modern philosophical orientation and Gandhiji did it by popularizing the concept of 'Ram-Raj' and 'Hind Swaraj' during the course of the Freedom Movement.
With the departure of the British and the partition of the country into India and Pakistan, millions of adherents to Hinduism had to migrate as Pakistan became an Islamic state. In the secular ambience of India, the Hindus constitue to be the majority of the population. The second largest population in Srilanka and Bhutan are the Hindus. Inspite of ups and downs in the policies of the governments, the Hindus constitute to be a noticeable percentage in the populations of Pakistan and Bangladesh. Thus as a whole, Hinduism is the major religion of the Indian subcontinent. Hinduism should not be viewed as the primary or dominant religion of the region; Islam has a tremendous following in Pakistan, Bangadesh, and Sri Lanka; Sikhism has more than 50 million adherents; and Vedic religions among the Tamil populations ensure that there is no single dominant faith.
