I believe one issue that makes freedom of religion controversial is that people always want freedom of religion in countries where their own personal religion is in a minority, but often want to restrict freedom of or from religion in countries where their religion is dominant. Thus, Christians want freedom of religion in Iran or China, but many Christians would choose to restrict that very freedom in the United States. Muslims want freedom of religion in the United States or France, among others, but demonstrate very clearly that freedom of religion is far from their minds in, say, Egypt or Pakistan.

In case it seems controversial to say that many Christians would choose to restrict freedom of religion in the United States, think about the reaction of some to the presence of moderate Muslims in the country. Think about the gossip that perhaps Barack Obama is a closet Muslim, as if that would undermine his legitimacy as President. Think about continued attempts to include prayer, Bible readings or religion in public schools, and remember it is always Christian prayer and Christian religious teachings that are sought. I see no one standing up and saying, "Let's teach all the children in our school about Buddhism this year." Think about the words of President Bush when he said that atheists should be denied citizenship.

Freedom of religion is in the interest of minorities, but not in the interest of the dominant religion.

Freedom of religion can be controversial because it involves balancing the right to practice one's beliefs against potential conflicts with laws, rights of others, or societal norms. Differences in beliefs and practices can lead to tension and clashes when individuals or groups feel their freedoms are being restricted or when beliefs are perceived as harmful or discriminatory. Additionally, geopolitical factors, historical conflicts, and power struggles can also contribute to the controversy surrounding freedom of religion.

Another answer from our community:

Freedom of religion is so controversial because certain religions, such as Christians, believe that they are the "correct" religion which deems every other religion "incorrect" and therefore wrong. It is all about perspective. Every religion wants to be the "right" religion. Don't target the christians in person i think freedom of religion is a political controversy. to put the world peace at stake and seek their own benifit.
