Industrial pollution can result from most industrial processes if properly designed and maintained equipment is not in place. In general industrial pollution can be divided into three types:

• Solid waste: This results from various sources such as the creation of solid wastes from chemical reactions, the removal of inert materials from feed stocks, fly and bottom ash from heaters and burners and waste from water treatment plants. These are generally placed in secure landfill sites.
  
• Liquid waste. this includes oil and grease in contaminated water, dissolved materials from the processes and hot water from cooling systems. These may be discharged to rivers or put into deep well disposal systems
  
• Gaseous waste: These split into point source emissions from stacks and vents and fugitive sources including valves, open ponds, tank vents and leaks. These are discharged into the atmosphere.
  

The general causes of all of these emissions are:

• The lack of available treatment technology
  
• The failure to develop collection and recycling options
  
• The lack of markets for collected materials
• Sites making poor economic decisions when it comes to the cost/benefit relationships of control technology
