Immigrants came to America starting in the 1400s and the largest influx of them came during the 1800s and 1900s. They began to blend together, hence the name the melting pot idea. They blended their cultural ways, ideas and many developed friendships together. They eventually became Americanized as they learned English and English ways. Thankfully many of their cultural ways still exist. We have to thank them for great ethnic foods, work values, business values and beautiful music. We who live today are their offspring. We have benefited from their efforts to get relocated in order to fulfill that "American Dream." It was not easy for them, but they overcame. Due to their efforts to keep their own values and mix them with others they set a precedent of how American expect immigrants of today to act. We have a firm concept of "assimilation" and they need to learn our language. We do not have many countries around us that speak multiple languages as they do in Europe so we tend to expect people to learn English just as our forebears did.
