South Carolina stated their reason for secession was that there were unequal tariff laws targeting them and that they had the right to nullify or not follow the tariff. Because South Carolina was a state on the coast there were import and export restrictions and theyhad to pay taxes for it. Other reasons for secession was that the government was unconstitutional and things along the lines of that. Read Hamilton's and Jefferson's "manufactures" talks about whether or not to get into manufacturing in America. Hamilton is for it but Jefferson is against it. Look into the Missouri compromise, compromise of 1850, Kansas-Nebraska act, and South Carolina's ordinance of nullification.
