Ku Klux Klan is the name of three distinct past and present far-right Christian terrorist organizations in the United States, which have advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy, white nationalism, anti-Immigration and anti-communism. The first Ku Klux Klan was an organization that thrived in the South during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. The second was a nationwide organization that flourished after World War I. Subsequent groups calling themselves the Ku Klux Klan sprang up in much of the South after World War II and in response to civil-rights activity during the 1960s.

The original Ku Klux Klan was organized by ex-Confederate elements to oppose the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican Congress and to maintain "white supremacy." It was organized at Pulaski, Tenn., in May, 1866.
