Aztec houses were very plain inside. Everyone slept on mats of reeds that were spread on the dirt floor at night. Families had cooking pots and utensils made of clay. There were goblets for pulque and other drinks, graters for grinding chilis, and storage pots of various designs. Reed baskets were also used for storage. The houses had no windows or chimneys, so they must have been dark and smoky from the cooking fire. There were no doors, just an open doorways. Even the palaces had open doorways with clothes hanging over them.
