The Aztec Emperor Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin (known today as Montezuma II) was typical of the native people of the Americas in having tan-colour skin, brown eyes and black hair. The first-hand account written by Bernal Diaz de Castillo also states that his skin was not particularly dark and he had a small black beard, which is less typical of native Americans since facial hair is generally very sparse.

When Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortés arrived, the Aztecs believed he was Quetzalcoatl, a god who would bring peace to Mexico (some hope!). "Quetzalcoatl" meant feathered snake.

He would by praying and sacrificing 8000 of his enemies and slicing his tounge with a thorn rope.
