Calculators

A calculator is a hand-held inexpensive electronic device used to perform the operations of arithmetic. The simplest calculators can only do addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, while scientific calculators can handle exponential operations, and trigonometric and logarithmic functions.

Is a computer faster than a calculator when performing calculations?

Yes, a calculator is a very simple computer. Since Personal Computers use faster processors, they can calculate faster.

How do you find the cubed root of a number in a scientific calculator?

Raise this number in power of 1/3. For example, to find the cube root of 27, 27^(1/3) = 3. Don't forget to put the parentheses, because if you don't do this, you can find a wrong answer. Without parentheses, as 27^1/3, the calculator will show you 9 as an answer, and this is a wrong answer. Try it.

What is Pi on a calculator?

Most calculators use the rounded-off version of pi, which is 3.14159265 (eight significant digits are more than most math problems will require).

On a calculator what does the HYP button do?

It does do something but I don't know what.

it does nothing

How do you hack a TI-30 calculator?

What does m mean on the calculator?

Memory

so if you want to save or add a number to your memory you would use M+

if you want to subtract a number from memory you would use M-

if you want to recall that number you would use MR

and if you no longer need to save that number you would use MC

How do you do multiplication without a calculator or long multiplication?

I round one of the numbers (usually the larger one but either one works) up or down to the nearest number that is easy to multiply in my head.

Like this:

423 x 12

Becomes:

425 x 12

Then I would say that if 425 x 12 = ___, then 850 x 6 = ____ too.

Because 850 = 425 x 2 and 6 = 12 / 2

And if 850 x 6 = ____, then 1700 X 3 = ____ also.

1700 x 3 = (1000 x 3) + (700 x 3) = 3000 + 2100 = 5100

So, 425 x 12 = 5100. But, we started with 423 not 425.

(425 x 12) - ((425-423) x 12) = 423 x 12

425 - 423 = 2

So, we need to multiply the difference (2) by 12 and subtract that from the 5100 to get the real answer.

2 x 12 = 24

5100 - 24 = 5100 - 25 + 1 = 5076

423 x 12 = 5076 Ta Da!

Another way, is to break one into easy to use numbers (12 is good for this) and skip the rounding step. But, sometimes there is no easy split (3746 x 5317) and then the rounding works better. But, here is the split method (I also used it above.)

423 x 12 = (423 x 10) + 423 x 2

423 x 10 = 4230 and 423 x 2 = 846

4230 + 846 = 5076

With practice you will get faster at this and you will even be able to hold a conversation while doing the math. Then everyone will think you are a genius!

What does 1.6E7 mean on your calculator?

16000000. think of AEB as A * 10^B. So 2e3 is 2 followed by 3 zeros. or 2e3 = 2 times 1000. or 2000. Similarly, 1.6e7 is 1.6 times 10 000 000. or 16 000 000.

How do you put sin on a calculator?

You need a scientific calculator, or one with function keys.

What do the letters on a calculator mean?

I assume you mean graphing calculators. They are variables that you can store numbers to, like if you need to use it later on in a math problem. But they can't be used to figure out algebra equations. Say you have the equation n+1=2 and n+m=4. You would figure out the value of n, which is 1, and you could either remember it or store it to variable n. Then you could use the variable n in figuring out m instead of putting in 1. (4-n=m instead of 4-1=m)

How do you find the square root of 200 without a calculator?

Well, the easiest way is to note that √200 = √2 x √100 = 10√2. You can look up √2 in a book, and then just shift the decimal one place.

Alternatively, there is a procedure for computing the square root of a number with pencil and paper. It looks very much like old-fashioned "long division," but with some differences in the details.

  1. First, write the number you are finding the square root of, grouping the digits in pairs on either side of the decimal point. Thus, 200 becomes 2 00 . 00 00 00 00
  2. The first group of digits is just the number 2. Find the largest square that is less than that number. In this case, that's 1. The square root of 1 is also 1, and that is the first digit of the answer.
  3. Subtract the square from the previous step, leaving a remainder of 1, and bring down the next pair of digits, leaving you with 100.
  4. You now take the answer so far, double it, and put a blank next to it. In this case, that's 2_.
  5. Fill in the blank with the largest number that gives you a multiple 2_ * _ that is less than your working remainder. 21 * 1 = 21, 22 * 2 = 44, 23 * 3 = 69, 24 * 4 = 96, 25 * 5 = 125, so the largest multiple that fits our requirements is 24 * 4. Write the 4 as the next digit of the answer, and subtract 96 from the working remainder of 100, and bring down the next pair of digits.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you reach the precision you require.

Here's what it looks like:

1 4 . 1 4 2 1 3 5 6 2 √ 2 00 . 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 1 * 1 = 1 - 1 1 00 24 * 4 = 96 - 96 4 00 281 * 1 = 281 - 2 81 1 19 00 2824 * 4 = 11296 - 1 12 96 6 04 00 28282 * 2 = 56564 - 5 65 64 38 36 00 282841 * 1 = 282841 - 28 28 41 10 07 59 00 2828423 * 3 = 8485269 - 8 48 52 69 1 59 06 31 00 28284265 * 5 = 141421325 - 1 41 42 13 25 17 64 17 75 00 282842706 * 6 = 1697056236 - 16 97 05 62 36 67 12 12 64 00 2828427122 * 2 = 5656854244 - 56 56 85 42 44 10 55 27 21 56
