I'd have to somewhat disagree with the above poster - scams period are abundant on craigslist be it auto - realestate - apt or goods by plenty of locals in the area be it yours or mine or his/hers.

Funny that the US government was so conserned about the sex industry (ie escorts) placing ads on craigslist but not the real crimes against the people. The ones that hurt people in the pocket book. The easiest to find - takes 1 minute and you'll run into a local scam or just plain illegal business practices on craigslist. Especially in Auto / Realestate which is something that would be a considered a basic public need and want.

To answer the question: How to arrest craigslist auto scammers - call your local authorities if local or the county they are in give them as much info as you can.

Get vin numbers if checking out a car and you find it is not road worthy and being sold as road worthy. You can also report them to Craigslist though they probably will just repost. Also - the Feds have a internet scam site you can report the scam to with online links - get screen shots of everything. The federal agency is probably over wrought with online scam reports - so don't expect much. I've reported many and got nothing back ever - we're talking in years since reporting the scam or fraud.

Personally I'm all for going back to - meet them - if they rip you off - get your money back then shoot 'em so they don't do it again. Bet it would cut back on the scams if this happened and word got out it would happen. lol

To at least partially answer your question, the vast majority of the scammers post in the free section. They list items and then collect the email address of people who reply and sell them. Answer one of these and you will start to get a bunch of spam. Or you get a reply which says something like "I got so many responses that I have decided to raffle it off" or "The item is gone, but I know this website where you can get your own for free." and give you link to click on. This will either send you to their website, which will direct you to another site. They get credit or points they can use to buy things for each person they send to the site.

Or they send you to a site which promises you something free in exchange for taking a survey. These usually end up be level after level of offers for magazines, free one month supply when you sign up for automatic shipping of something, etc. You usually have to complete (read this as buy) something to progress to the next level. Even if you finally get tired of going through the levels (never having reached the "free item", you then get about a zillion emails with offers. Each site "shares your address with other sites and it takes about 6 months to unsubscribe from all of them since you have to do each one separately.

As far as listing a fake item for sale, these generally turn out to be someone pranking another person, either just as a joke or to actually be mean spirited.
