Cuba is a former Spanish colony which has essentially the same kind of Hispanic culture that is found throughout most of the Caribbean and South and Central America; added to this is the effect of over half a century of communist rule, which has made Cuba both more socialist and more insular in its culture.

Cuba does not have a "prime minister" as such. The official position of Prime Minister was abolished in 1976, and replaced by the position of "President of the Council of Ministers." The last prime minister was Fidel Castro, who assumed the new position. The current council president is his brother, Raúl Castro, who is concurrently the First Secretary of the Communist Party in Cuba.

The citizens of Cuba have limited rights and freedoms. Among their freedoms are their right to healthcare, the right to free expression and opinion, a restricted freedom of assembly that is monitored by the government, right to an education, and religious freedom.

The U.S. was not initially sympathetic to Cuba's independence, but rather, they were sympathetic to Cuba's struggle for independence. The U.S. had compassion for what they were going through. At the end of the Spanish-American War the U.S. recognized Cuba's independence from Spain.

Cuba caused problems in the US since Castro was brought to power in 1959, in the revolution. Castro forced all US businesses and investments to leave Cuba. In retaliation, the USA refused to buy cubas main export; sugar. This was in the middle of the cold war, so the Soviet Union saw a way to gain influence in the carribean. The Soviet Union quickly offered to buy Cuban sugar and also provide machinery, oil and technological assistance to Cuba. Cuba agreed. Castro was now linked with the Soviet Union and he professed that his political views were towards communism. As a result of the Soviet involvment in Cuba, the USA broke off relations with Cuba in January 1961. Shortly after this, Cuba declared itself communist. This worried the USA, because communism was now closer to home then ever. This all then lead to the Bay of Pigs invasion and Cuban Missile Crisis.

They have a few mountains in Cuba. One of the most popular mountain ranges for tourists are the Sierra Del Escambray in which you can do some beautiful treks around the waterfalls of the region. The area is also popular for bird-spotting.

During the Cold War or"proxy wars" Cuba's Fidel Castro overthrew the dictator that the United States had originally set up to be a puppet government; the US lost control of Cuba and Castro joined the side of Russia (then USSR). Then the Cuban Missile Crisis followed... Relations between Cuba and the US quickly deteriorated and the US set in place a trade and travel embargo (meaning that nothing goes in or out of Cuba from/to the US). The embargo that is currently holding people back from traveling to Cuba is a relic and needs to be removed. The US, being as stubborn as possible, will likely not lift the the embargo until Castro dies because they believe it is symbolic or some other reason (it has NO practical reason).

Two birds that make their home in Cuba are the Cuban Finch and the Bee Hummingbird. Some mammals are the Cuban Hutia - The Largest mammal of Cuba who is a member of the rodent family. The Greater Bulldog Bat which got its name by its bulldog-like face. The Cuban Solendon which is almost extinct. There is also a Small Indian Mongoose which was brought into Cuba to maintain the rodent population. Some reptiles are the Cuban ground iguana, Cuban crocodile and the Cuban boa. Those are some of the animals in Cuba!
