Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a psychological state in which the mind is in something like a sleeping state. The mind is more open to suggestion. Hypnosis is used as a therapy to help people stop habits such as smoking. It is also used as a questioning technique to help people bring back memories they may have repressed.

What do you do to hypnotize people?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

All hypnosis is self hypnosis. So, so long as you have a way with words, and are able to manipulate people into believing what you're saying is true, they you will be successful at hypnotism.

Basically what it boils down to is that if the person being hypnotized doesn't believe they can be hypnotized, they WILL NOT be hypnotized.

Hypnosis does not tap deeper into you subconscious, or any of that BS, it's just really good sales men telling you "YOU CAN DO IT!"

How do you feel during hypnosis?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You are in a trance during every waking moment. How do you feel right now? We move from trance to trance while we are awake, and we even live out a life-trance. Being in a trance is no big deal. The idea is to awaken from a less healthy trance into a more healthy one.

Where can someone be hypnotized?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A person can be hypnotized anywhere, at any time, though there are varying physical and environmental conditions which are conducive towards hypnotism.

It isn't recommended that a person be hypnotized other than by a properly qualified practitioner, usually holding at least a degree in psychology plus post-graduate studies in hypnotism.

Such a person will always show their credentials in this field. If they are reluctant to do so, or evasive, stay away from them.

What happens when you are hypnotized?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Experiences are subjective and variable: some people do not "feel" hypnotized even though they clearly are. Generally, you are in a very relaxed but "hyperattentive", very focused, state during which peripheral awareness is much reduced, or even eliminated. Although it is likely you'll remain aware of background sounds etc, they will seem distant and irrelevant, and your attention will be "fixed" on whatever the hypnotist suggests or directs. Sometimes it may seem his/ her voice is "inside" your head, or it seem very "distant", like a "thread" on which you're suspended.

Physically, you'll probably be very still and not feel much desire to move; limbs may feel very heavy, or you may experience a general "lightness" as if floating in the air. Your eyes may water quite a lot (due to relaxation of tear ducts), and you will probably salivate and swallow more than you normally do. Eyes are likely to move rapidly - from side to side; up and down, or just generalized - and eyelids will flicker. If very deeply hypnotized it's quite likely your eyes will roll right up into your head, and remain there easily. Although generally heart rate decreases, in some cases it may speed up, and it is also not uncommon to experience increased bodily warmth, and sometimes reddening of the face/ flushing.

Very deeply hypnotized people may be embarrassed by spontaneous penile or clitoral erection, but as this normally only occurs in those in a "somnambulistic" hypnotic state, in which active self-awareness is much reduced and trance amnesia common, it generally isn't as big a problem as might be imagined.

For most people being hypnotized is a profoundly pleasant experience during which they're totally self-aware: it is often described as like a "waking dream" or just "zoning out", and as already indicated, many don't even think anything has happened other than just sitting or lying very still and listening to another person talk to them. In truth, that is really all it is - a very focused and intense form of interpersonal communication. Even the minority (maybe 10%) who go so "deep" they experience amnesia etc only do so because they're predisposed, able and willing so to do, and have, therefore, in a sense, given consent. Bottom line is you can not be hypnotized unless you want to be; your basic mind set, attitudes, and capabilities will determine the level of trance attained, and - crucially - you will only do what is within your own bounds of acceptibility.

Is it possible to read a story and be hypnotized?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes - anyone who is deeply absorbed in reading a story IS hypnotized!

At its most basic, being "hypnotized" is simply being in a mental state where your concentration is highly focused on something (eg reading, watching a movie, listening to music, undertaking a task requiring intense concentration etc) to the exclusion of all else. So, someone who is "lost in a book", or "daydreaming", or fascinated by someone/ something, is in a state of hypnosis.

When about to fall asleep, you are hypnotized - you can not go to sleep without being in this state.

For which people is Hypnosis likely to be be least helpful?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It really depends on what you mean by "helpful" or the negative thereof? Basically the facts are some of us are more easily hypnotised than others. Usually people with an intense imaginitive life respond best to hypnotism but for hypnosis to be successful it is essential you must first want to be hypnotised. The second requirement is your ability to relax and thirdly it may be dependent on the way your brain works..

So To try to answer your question, I submit the three key factor in you being successfully hypnotised are

1.that you believe it is going to work on you,

2. that you have the will and

3. you have the motivation to make whatever change in your behaviour is involved 4., That you yourself are not somebody who cannot be hypnotised.

Because importantly not everyone is able to be hypnotized. According to research conducted by the Stanford School of Medicine in the USA. about 15% of the world population appear to be "highly hypnotizable", around 60% can be hypnotised with more difficulty and 25% are thought to be not hypnotizable at all.

Why is this you may well ask? That is a really complex and controversial issue. But it seems that changes in people's brain activity have been found in some studies of highly responsive hypnotic subjects. These changes vary depending upon the type of suggestions being given to you, the state of light to medium hypnosis, whereit appears the body undergoes physical and mental relaxation associated with a pattern mostly of alpha waves.

The Stanford University study cites evidence that the brains of people who can not be hypnotised differ from those who can easily be. In the brains of people they found to be highly hypnotizable it was found the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, that is an executive-control region of their brain, appeared to be activated in tandem with the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, which is part of the salience network. It is that which is known to play a key role in focusing the individual's attention. The Standford University studies found little functional connectivity between these two areas of people's the brain of those individuals with low hypnotizability.

But very many have used clinical hypnotherapy to change their behaviour successfully. One factor in assessing this is that people who consult a hypnotherapist to address their anxieties, phobias, or stop such bad habits as smoking or overeating causing them obesity are highly motivated to change their behavior as well as being highly likely to have a high degree of faith in the process of hypnotherapy . So that is likely to mean they are extremely motivated to adopt the role of being a hypnotic subject and that also involves them being very willing to listen to positive suggestions from the hypnotherapist specifically because they may have this personal commitment or in some cases are absolutely desperate to overcoming their problems. Similarly people with phobias and bulimia also appear to score high on hypnotic susceptibility scales and to respond favourably to hypnotic intervention.

As for Stage Hypnosis it is also believed by many to be indication of the successful controlling people's minds. But whether that really is the case is highly controversial. Stage hypnosis is essentially a popular form of entertainment employed in a club or theatre before an audience where the hypnotist typically tries to hypnotise the entire audience. Then he chooses individuals who are "under" to come up to the stage and he makes them do silly and perhaps embarrassing things while the audience watches in amusement.

Although there is some controversy, many claim rightly or wrongly that the effects of stage hypnosis are not really mind control but probably due to a combination of psychological factors, participant selection, deception and other sorts of trickery such as people planted in the audience who pretend their mind is being totally controlled against their will just to make the show more entertaining.

Similarities and differences between imagery and hypnosis?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The question presupposes that they are similar, but they are not really similar. In its widest sense, to meditate about something is merely to muse on it. You have probably focused musingly on something many, many times. It is unlikely, however, that you have ever been hypnotized. Supposedly, when you are in a hypnotic state you are in a sleep-like state in which you act only because of external suggestions. Many are sceptical that hypnotic states exist.

What is the nature of hypnosis?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hypnosis has long been a mystery. The effects of hypnosis have been proven to help several patients in varying different areas. But what has yet to be explained by science is exactly how hypnosis works. The perception that most people have of hypnosis involves a magician with a shiny object. This magician waves this object in front of a crowd member to put them in a trance. After a few snaps of his fingers and a few soft words, the crowd member is soon barking like a dog or clucking like a chicken.

Hypnosis can be used even instead of anaesthetics in surgery.

Also another name you may have heard of for hypnosis is conversational hypnosis, underground hypnosis, covert hypnosis or black ops hynposis.

Basically that form of hypnosis is taking the listener under a 'spell' if you will. The talker is able to develop and build a rapport with someone and embed commands in their words when speaking. Here's a good resource to check out that gives a little more information on the power of conversational hypnosis.

What is the difference between hypnosis and guided imagery?

User Avatar

Asked by Atao88

Good question! NLP uses aspects of conversational hypnosis which was modeled from the work of Dr. Milton H. Erickson in the 1970's. Therefore, all of NLP has and uses some distinctions from hypnosis - in a very indirect manner. Hypnosis specifically however, uses more direct suggestions and is often a do-to therapeutic tool where NLP is more of a do-with tool.
